Memo: On my pay while I am in Japan.

I have been thinking about what I should get from Stanford while
I am in Japan. The basic principle should be that I neither gain nor lose
from going there on sabbabtical. I think that I should get whatever the
sabbatical pay is (partly from the University sabbatical account and partly
from the AI Lab according to their customary division of my salary) and that
the Lab should make up the difference to achieve the desired financial result.
I will be spending much of my time on AI research, hopefully more time than
I manage to spend on it here since I won't have administrative responsibilities,
and this will justify charging the time to ARPA. The remaining problem is
to estimate what part of what the Japanese pay will just make up for extra
living expenses and what part is general salary. I suggest that half of
the $1100 per month they are paying should pay my extra living expenses and
the other half should be considered as salary per se. Incidentally, I save
almost no money here, because my daughter will be living in my house so
I can't rent it.
If the matter can be handled, ex post facto, the numbers can be revised after
I return.
